IBM
Always cool to see what IBM is up to, and apparently this supercomputer could have major implications other than beating people at Jeopady.
Starting your side business
Lifehacker has a great list of essential tools for starting your side business. I’ve found basecamp to be particularly helpful in streamlining communication, meetings etc.
Welcome to NYC
New York magazine reports on people’s first days in NYC. I like the start to Amy Sedaris’s:
The first thing I saw when I came to New York was a man leaning up against a wall, shitting. Perfect! I was never scared in Chicago. Here your fear was sitting right in front of you.
Torture
Great NY Times article about the use of “enhanced interrogation” by a former F.B.I. supervisory special agent. It basically boils down to:
Traditional interrogation techniques are successful in identifying operatives, uncovering plots and saving lives. There was no actionable intelligence gained from using enhanced interrogation techniques on Abu Zubaydah that wasn’t, or couldn’t have been, gained from regular tactics, In addition I saw that using these alternative methods on other terrorists backfired on more than a few occasions — all of which are still classified. The short sightedness behind the use of these techniques ignored the unreliability of the methods, the nature of the threat, the mentality and modus operandi of the terrorists, and due process.
Face Painting
What inspires you to paint your face every day? I mean SERIOUSLY?!? Who has that much time? Anyways I like the goodyear blimp one…
Earth Day
Boston.com has another good big picture segment based on Earth Day. Always a treat to check out what they put together.
Britain’s Economy
Interesting article about the difficulties facing the British economy. Somehow I am always more interested in things going on in Britain than any other European country, and I even wrote a research paper on British political ideologies. Considering I’m spending 2 months in England this summer I guess this article is bittersweet; their economy is failing, but that means the exchange improves for me.
The Budget Visualized
Wallsats.com presents a very informative graphic showing the breakding down this year’s tax distribution including the year over year change from 2008. I think it gives a good view of how priorities are changing and is worth spending some time looking over.
Google News Timeline
I love the idea of organizing data we interact with on a daily basis in new and interesting ways. They did it with Picasa in photos and Gmail for communication now there is Google News Timeline. I don’t know if it will ever be anything more than an interesting time waster, but it does a pretty durn good job of that.
Oprah
Sad news coming from South Africa with respect to Oprah’s school. It really is a shame they have had to slash budgets during this economic crisis. It just goes to show that even one of the wealthiest women in the world has been affected.
Guaruja House
Awesome house with a wood theme set into a natural setting, if anyone would like to hook me up I’d be happy to move in shortly. Thanks Kanye.
